The production of plutonium pits resulted not only in extensive toxic and radioactive contamination in the environment but also negative public health effects, deeply divisive social and cultural attitudes among workers and local residents, and ongoing political ramifications. Plutonium pits, the radioactive cores or triggers of nuclear weapons, essentially provide the heart of a nuclear bomb. At the heart of the Cold War effort in the United States, Rocky Flats produced more than 70,000 plutonium pits for nuclear weapons. The history and catastrophes of the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant just outside Denver, Colorado, had environmental, political, and health effects that extended beyond just the Front Range of Colorado. This book represents the research and analysis of scientists, medical researchers, philosophers, artists, writers, and activists who have been impacted by one of the most notorious nuclear weapons sites in the United States: Rocky Flats.
